The Punjab government has officially lifted the 18-year-old ban on the Basant festival, allowing kite-flying celebrations to return across the province. The announcement was made on Wednesday and has sparked excitement among residents who have long awaited the festival’s comeback.
Basant was banned in 2007 following a rise in deadly incidents caused by metal and chemical-coated kite strings. These dangerous materials led to several injuries and fatalities, forcing the government to halt the popular spring festival.
Officials say Basant will now be celebrated under strict safety measures. Only safe, cotton-based kite strings will be allowed, while the sale and use of metal or hazardous strings will be strictly prohibited. Heavy fines and action will be taken against violators.
The government has also instructed police and administration teams to monitor markets, supervise celebrations, and run awareness campaigns to ensure the festival is enjoyed responsibly.
Public reaction has been largely positive
, with many welcoming the return of the colorful festival. However, some citizens have expressed concerns about safety, urging strict enforcement of rules to prevent accidents.
With the decision now in place, Punjab is preparing for a vibrant Basant season-one that officials hope will be both joyful and safe.
